Student Care Issues

Overview

The student counsellor should be aware of student care systems for the welfare of students while they are in the destination country. Student care involves social, emotional, and cultural support. It may include language and learning support, support programmes, and specialised advice and information.

International students require a higher level of care as:

  • They are away from their family and friendship networks
  • They are often not well connected to community support systems
  • They must cope in a foreign language
  • They must function in an environment where values and behaviour patterns may be very different.

Focus Questions

  • What systems do institutions have to support international students?
  • How do international student advisers and other support personnel help students?
  • What external support can students access?
  • What assistance is available regarding cultural differences?
  • How can the student counsellor assist a student to prepare for their studies in the destination country?
  • Why is it important for students to attend an institution’s orientation program?
